Bee lifecycle reference 

  • Eggs – 3 days from laying to larvae
  • Larvae – Workers and Queen capped after 5 days (8 total), Drones after 7 (10 total)
  • Capped – Queen hatches after 8 days (16 total), Workers after 13 days (21 total), Drones after 14 days (24 total)

Queen Marking Colours  – The colour code is based on the last digit of the year:

  • 1,6  White
  • 2,7  Yellow
  • 3,8  Red
  • 4,9  Green
  • 0,5  Blue

Cleaning solution – for cleaning equipment between hives

1KG Soda Crystals (cheapest is Thornes as of March 2017 – £10 for 10KG) + 5 Ltrs water.    NB – This can be kept for about 1 Month

National Frame Sizes

  • DN1 – Deep(Brood) size – thin (22mm) and need spacers
  • SN1 – Super size – thin (22mm) and need spacers
  • DN2 / SN2 – as DN1/SN1 but with slightly wider top bar (27mm)
  • DN4 – Deep(Brood), Hoffman spacing (35mm, tapering thinner at bottom)
  • SN4 – Super, Hoffman spacing (35mm, tapering thinner at bottom)
  • BS Manley – Super size only. Parallel (41mm) side bars to make uncapping easier
  • DN5 / SN5 – As DN4/SN4 with slightly wider top (27mm) bar
  • 14×12 frames – for 14×12 brood box only – generally hoffman spacing
